In recent years, Jeep has expanded its electrified lineup to include two of its most well-known models: the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee. Both are available in plug-in hybrid variants, known as 4xe, that deliver the rugged capability Jeep vehicles are known for, with improved fuel efficiency and electric driving capabilities. Your local Jeep dealership will compare these two PHEV models so you can understand which one is best suited to your needs.
Performance
Both PHEV vehicles use a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine and two electric motors to deliver power. The Wrangler 4xe produces a total output of 375 hp and 470 lb.-ft of torque. It uses an 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and has standard four-wheel drive. This SUV offers up to 21 miles of electric-only driving range and an EPA-estimated 49 MPGe. The Wrangler 4xe remains off-road focused with up to 10.8 inches of ground clearance and several 4×4 systems available.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe produces the same power output as the Wrangler 4xe. However, its unibody platform and independent front and rear suspensions provide a smoother ride on pavement. The all-electric driving range is slightly higher at 25 miles, and it has an EPA-estimated 56 MPGe. The Grand Cherokee 4xe also has a higher towing capacity than the Wrangler 4xe, with a maximum of 6,000 pounds compared to the Wrangler’s 3,500 pounds.
Interior
The Wrangler 4xe’s interior reflects its off-road-focused nature with durable, washable materials, removable carpets, and floor drain valves. It also includes keyless entry, power-adjustable front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Infotainment comes courtesy of an 8.4-inch display that hosts Uconnect 5 software, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and optional navigation.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe is larger and as such, offers greater interior space for passengers and cargo. It also comes with more luxury-oriented features such as Nappa leather upholstery, massaging front seats, and real wood trim in upper trims. The rear seats have available heating and ventilation. This SUV uses the same Uconnect 5 infotainment system but features a larger, standard, 10.1-inch touchscreen.
Exterior
The Wrangler 4xe retains a boxy and rugged look that heralds back to its WW2 roots. It features removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and a modular roof system that includes removable hardtops and soft tops. Blue tow hooks, 4xe badging, and blue accents on the hood decals distinguish the PHEV variant from its gas-powered counterparts. The Grand Cherokee 4xe has a more contemporary look, with exterior elements that emphasize luxury and aerodynamics. The front fascia includes Jeep’s signature seven-slot grille framed by slim LED headlights. Trailhawk models are more off-road focused and feature blue tow hooks, skid plates, and all-terrain tires.
Both PHEV vehicles offer drivers incredible capability and superior efficiency. For off-road purists, the Wrangler 4xe is an ideal choice that expertly maintains traditional Jeep ruggedness. On the other hand, the Grand Cherokee 4xe provides greater refinement and space that suits adventure-focused families. Find your ideal Jeep at Audubon Chrysler Center in Henderson, KY.
